Dear Friends,

Some time ago we discussed by mail the subject Santiago de Compostela and you informed me about a lecture you attended at your university. I wrote you about my personal hiking experience as a pilgrim along el Camino de Santiago and the interest in stories, tales and narratives about Saint James. Also about the effort to extend my library and to find a copy of the interesting and important book The Way of Saint James, by Georgiana Goddard King, M.A. Finally, after many months of digging I found a copy of the third volume of the book and started reading. I will give you some commentary about it, but first I like to tell you about the long search operation.

Some years ago I met Geert Bakker, (co-writer of the Dutch pilgrims guide Pelgrimspad Deel 2: Door Brabant en Limburg: 's-Hertogen-bosch-Visé (B), ISBN 907106843-9), and we shared the same interest in el camino de Santiago. He was quite interested in The Way of Saint James which is undoubtedly a part of the world's literature. However, I thought there was only one copy of this specific book available in the Netherlands in the Royal Library at The Hague, but not on loan. [Search on www.worldcatlibraries.org -gb]
Alhough Geert Bakker is a retired professional pilgrim he is still active and informed me recently that there are original copies and reproductions of legal prints available in the USA. I ordered via internet and received a reprinted copy via Amazon (www.amazon.com) within 2 weeks and I started reading. Further reference: http://pilgrimsplaza-king-index.blogspot.com. The book is well written in an easy understandable way at an academical level. It covers history and art, culture and tradition over a long period related to Saint James. It is written with full knowledge of the covered subjects based on local investigation and extensive, reliable research with most of the available literature.

Miss King was a gifted teacher and talented author, professor in History of Art and a member of the Hispanic Society of America. Although The Way of Saint James was issued in 1920 by Putnam's Sons N.Y. (no ISBN-number), the book is culturally important and the book and notes are still valid and it contains much unknown and interesting information.

You can imagine that it takes some time to study the whole volume carefully and so I will only give you a first impression of some chapters I browsed:

In Año Santo Miss King is telling her experience during the trip to Santiago by train, observing various people and in local surrounding.

II. THE CHURCH OF THE APOSTLE 34
Here Miss King is explaining the history and is referring to several sources by notes.

III. DIEGO GELMÍREZ 88
This chapter started in the year 1077 and tells about local history, troubles and fights. Finally the visit of Alfonso to Santiago and the death of Diego in 1140. (He died after Calixtus). Diego Gelmirez was a good soldier, a great ruler and a magnificent prince.

IV. COMPOSTELA 139
Starts telling about the church bells, statues, treasures and jewels of the santuary. The processions, hymns, status and life in and around the church. The growing number of pilgrims and visitors from all corners of Christendom and the wealth of donations.

V. THE WORLD’S END 202
The World's End is referring to the locations related to Saint Yakob, (Saint James) like Iria Flavia, (Padron), where by tradition the original landing of Saint James took place. La Barca de S.Yago on the Ria de Camarinas and may be, on an other site a ship with cables, hull and other tackle all of stone which transported God and his Mother and embarked there. It appears that a rocking stone is still frequented at Mugia (Muxia), for Nuestra Senora at the extreme end of Europe. And Finally the Cape of Finisterre, the end of the ancient worl, (El Cabo).

This chapter describes the Dark Star, the granite land that lies at the End of the World, with ancient people with ancient faiths, called Galicia. The basic ancient elements are the relation still maintained with spirits of vegetation and natural magic intended to control the principle of fertility. Practices connected with death and ghosts are the spirits of feasts and folk-tradition. May-Day celebration e.g. in Galicia and Asturias. Further the influence of Saint James and his disciples in that area.

The paragraphs The Long Way and The Bridge of Dead expect a connection between Ireland and Spain by folk-lore. They are referring to voyages to the land whence none returns. The fear for Doomsday and the afterlife. The bridge, through it must be crossed does not lead necessarily to hell. The land of dead played a great role in ancient Celtic beliefs.

Along the Eastern Road 365
Romans lived always on good terms with their dead. In Roman as in Catholic days the dead came back to asked for prayers and sacrifices for rosaries and masses. The most striking trait common to all Celtic lore is its indifference to logic and that we fondly call the law of causation.

The paragraph The Constant Worship (285) starts with the phrase Religions change but the cult remains the same. The immemorial worship has never changed in the City of the hollow hill when successive religious overflowed the land, referring to legendary matter, folk-lore and early writers, monuments, coins, dediations and inscriptions. To the Romans as to Celts the Tierra de Santiago was the Land of Dead and the idea of twin brethren with only one was immortal and was taken to heaven. [foto: the steps of Le Puy]

The paragraph The Star-led Wizards (314) refers to the time before Catholic Kings when Galicia had very little to do with the Roman Christianity. In the earlier ages for long streches of time, it had also lapses from christianity altogether. (318) Vota piñas en octubre / Cereixas no mes de mayo: The ancient Mithras culture gradually was replaced and along el Camino de Santiago the souls were guided by Saint Michael and Saint James assumed the role and at Compostela it is his main business. Also traces of cultures of other Asian goddness, like Syrian, Libanon and Heliopolis can be found. The Syrian emigrants were especially numerous. The gods of the Orient followed the great commercial and social currents, due to good roads. A way is prepared and a path made straight between the Lords of the east and the west, the high gods of the gods of thunder.

The paragraph The Mortal Twin (334) starts with the apocryphal Acts of Apostles and the general confusion of mind, in earlier centries of church, about the names and character of certain apostles and disciples, equally, the situation is not very clear. There are only three names of six Apostles which are hard; some of them are brothers, some of them are commemorated in couples. James was the brother of the Lord, but which James (?). Miss Georgiana King is referring to generalogy and the Golden Legend. Which are brethren? Same names are used for different persons and that easily has caused confusion in the past. However, by studying the Memorials of the Apostles, extensive amounr of scriptures, decoding inscriptions, romances of pilgrims and by visiting sanctuaries, it was possible for Miss King to receive a better view of the place of these individuals in the ancient history. Also she was referring to Rendel Harris (Cambridge 1913) for more detailed data about Saint James on twin brothers, mortal twin and look alikes.

The paragraph The High God (347) starts wit Adad the bull-god, the Lord of Storms and associated readily with a sun-god. Further the pagan worship with rituals, pillar cult, carrying images, spring-processions and special referrences with the Syrian, Egyptian, Anatolien ans Asiatic cults.

The last paragraph Along the eastern Road (365) refers to certain aspects in earlier chapters. The high God of Compostela had taken up into himself all the worships, all devotions that reached his shrine, and there were many. They were borne in the dust of marching legions of wandering peddlars of returning pilgrims and crusaders. His santuary was like the Syrian goddess's with something of traits of all others, Jerusalem, Byzance and Baälbek.

Final remark: I am still looking [try www.abebooks.com; towards the end of November 2007 I saw the last three rather expensive first prints ranging from $150 to nearly $400- gb] for copies of Volume 1: BOOK ONE: THE PILGRIMAGE, BOOK TWO: THE WAY and of Volume 2: BOOK TWO: THE WAY (continued). Maybe there are still original copies or reprints available, but unfortunately untill now I could not trace them. If you can provide me with some additional information how to get in the possession of BOOK ONE & TWO (in the Volumes 1 & 2), I would much appreciate your comment.

Following my earlier review of Volume 3: BOOK THREE: THE BOURNE I gladly provide you with a review of Volume 3: BOOK FOUR: HOMEWARD:

I. SUMMING UP 373
In chapter I Miss King begins by saying (374): “I was going home, now, coming ‘back to do my day's work in my day’” and “Before leaving Galicia there were accounts to settle. Some Spaniards assert, Sr. Casanova, for instance, that Santiago came down ready made like the New Jerusalem out of heaven.” Having read everything that was available, Georgiana concludes that “The truth is that Santiago can take care of himself".

The first paragraph The Portico of Visions (375) tells about the symbolism of the sculptures at the western door which must be read in the light of the twelfth century, not what one thinks of one's self, but what the Middle Ages thought, read and recited must be explained. “The theme of Master Matthew's porch is Apocalyptic, but the sources of the imagery are to be found less precisely in the twenty-first chapter of the Revelation of S. John the Devine than in the mediaeval literature of Visions”.

In the paragraph The Chantier (379) we learn about the great rebuilding of the cathedral and the builders, (Benedictine and Burgundian Romanesque style after 1078), and about the aspects of cathedrals and churches in northern Spain and France. (381) “Workmen must have passed along the roads and the better being fetched to Compostella would stay there.” (383) “In the eleventh and twelfth century the courts of the south were sought by everyone who lived by the arts; and all the courts in turn. There was a current of trobadors circling in the great stream of pilgrims, like a dance of motes in a ray of sunlight.”

In the paragraph Excursus on some Twelfth Century Sculpture (386) we see also another current than that of French architecture manifesting itself, which is the Italian current that passed by the crusaders' route.

The paragraph Workmen of S.James (396) tells “at the time of the first consecration of Santiago, 1102, the transept portals were probably in use, although they need not have been completely finished.” In 1168 Master Matthew began work on the Gloria. His style “is very different; racy, and in his pupils homely.” (He knew Vézelay and Chartres). “It was copied, of course, with exactitude at Orense and once was deliberately imitated superbly at Avila.” The other cathedrals of Galicia, Mondoñedo and Lugo, Tuy and Orense include in their most important aspects, simply Romanesque capitals. (403)

Paragraph Sorting (407) is “looking back over the whole journey, the churches are recalled in groups which correspond to their function rather than geography. Beginning with cathedrals, the list reads, Jaca, Pampeluna, Vitoria, Burgos, Leon, Astorga. (408) Two monastic churches betray French builders, Las Huelgas and Villa-Sirga.” “Eunate and Torres, built for knights of the Holy Sepulchre, are more like each other than anything else. (408) The roll of great abbeys is overpowering: S. Juan de la Peña, Leyre, Irache, Frómista, S. Zoyl of Carrion, Benevívere, Sahagún, S. Pedro de las Dueñas, S. Isidore, Samos, S. Lorenzo de Carboeiro. (411) Conventual and collegiate churches may be classed together by the condition of their organization and their endowment.”

The conclusion is that (414) “in the twelfth century the great abbeys, followed in the thirteenth century by the cathedrals, imported their builders. The monastic and collegiate foundations imitated in as far as they could afford, but the Spanish leaven works more here, and here again a very noble Romanesque style, in a very real sense Spanish, is dominant. The burgher churches, mostly much later in date, are strictly Spanish and almost Renaissance: but they are made out of all that had gone before. The whole entrance of Cistercian, and Friars' Gothic of Galicia, though they contributed to fifteenth-century art, are apart from the present question, as the monuments are apart from the camino francés.”

II. MA CALEBASSE, C’EST MA COMPAGNE 417
Chapter II begins with history in Charlemagne’s time. Later the (418) “Knights of the Temple and Hospital, Crusaders of Ferdinand the Great, Alfonso VI, companions of My Cid Ruy Diaz, and of the Lord of Battles, Alfonso of Aragon”. Further the martyrdom, the fights, the pilgrims, the confraternities of returned travellers; (419) the Confrèrie des Pèlerins de S. Jacques in Paris and (422) the confraternity at Compiègne. (424) But even in the sixteenth century the pilgrimages had follen off. (424) In 1671 and 1678 Louis XIV forbade any pilgrim to set out without a permit signed and countersigned, royal and episcopal sanction. “In 1777 five pilgrims of Monblanc (near Montepellier) were arrested, stripped, and sent to the workhouse at Pau.” (425) The Declaration of Independence had been signed already, but still numerous churches in the various countries were dedicated to S. James.

III. THE TWO ROADS 428
The motto of chapter III is: The green road and the grey road, they show no track.-Fiona Macleod. It covers, in a philosophical way, several matters, such as Roland's horn Olifaunt, the cathedral of Vitoria, sanctuaries, monasteries and Roncevaux.

The paragraph Ronceveaux (449) tells that “the whole region of Roncevaux is Pyrenean and neither Spanish nor French. The mass of the conventual buildings at the village with slate roofs hipped and pyramidal, ought to be in the Engadine or the Tyrol.” “The precise place of the battle, the probable path of the main army and the rear-guard, have all been discussed so learnedly and with such knowledge of the ground, that they need not here be touched.” (450) “Roland, when all was lost, had turned and crossed the field alone; he had searched the valleys, and he searched the valleys, and he searched the mountains and found his comrades one by one, and the Chanson names them; and he brought them, dead for Turpin's benedictions; ‘God the glorious have your souls’, says Turpin, ‘and put them in a fair paradise of flowers’. (453) “The splendour of Roncevaux is the splendour of a losing fight, the glory that shines on that field is the glory of martyrdom.”

The last paragraph Envoy (453) contains beautiful thoughts and Miss King's wonderful story in The Way of Saint James ends with a inspiring and undoubted meaningly poem (455):

The wind blows out of the door of day,
The pine trees toss along the way,
And the open road runs over and on
Wither the souls of the dead have gone.
Dead feet patter, dead voices say
Over the hills and far away !
